Little Life Updates: October 2013. (Just a Tad Late)

– Indulg-ing in a little too much TV. I’m not sure if I have ever mentioned it on here before but Marty and I don’t have a television. Scratch that. We do have a television but we don’t have a working DVD player, cable or even a box with basic channels. Why you ask? Well, for oen thing, we don’t want to pay 50+ for cable every month. Everyone’s budget is different and we would prefer to spend our money elsewhere (I.E. coffee and wine dates.) πŸ™‚ The other reason for this decision was to improve productivity at home. I spend enough time wastefully browsing the Internet, the last thing I need is for more of my time spent watching Kardashian + Sex in the City reruns.

That said…how am I watching too much TV?

Two glorious sites: Netflix and Hulu.

I’ve persuaded Marty to watch both The Mindy Show and New Girl and he can’t get enough (which is great for me because they are my two favorite shows. πŸ™‚ ) I also started watching episodes of The Office that I hadn’t seen (I stopped watching somewhere around the birth of Jim and Pam’s baby.) I need to cut back on the amount and continue to push through with my book challenge…speaking of…

– Pursu-ing that 52 book challenge for the year! I’m almost there! I have three books to go until I meet my goal. Maybe I’ll even surpass?!Β

  • Books I Liked:
    Books I Liked
    – I’m a Stranger Here Myself by Bill Bryson
    – The Midwife by Jennifer Worth
    – Made to Crave by Lysa Terkeurst
    – Every Body Matters by Gary Thomas
  • Books I Disliked:
    Books I Disliked
    – Fast Food Nation by Eric
    – Erasing Hell by Francis Chan
    – Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham
    – The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp

– Celebrat-ing all things Halloween! Halloween themed books and crafts with the kiddos, spooky decorated houses on our evening walks and trick-or-treat night (including Hocus Pocus and perfectly themed label on our bottle of wine.)

I’m going to give myself two more weeks to complete items on my fall bucket list and then I’ll begin my winter one. I look forward to sitting down and writing it!

    1. That’s so cool. I’d love to attend a seminar of hers πŸ™‚ I can totally see how God has been using the book in my life too. It has really encouraged me work through some of negative mindsets!!

  1. I also stopped watching The Office but picked it back up and finished it. There is a season or two that sucks really bad but I think the last episode made it all worth it. πŸ™‚

    1. He really is great – he’s so funny! I haven’t read it but I just bought A Walk in the Woods πŸ™‚ I’m looking forward to reading that one! I’ll have to check out Notes from a Small Island.

  2. Way to go on your 52 books goal!! That is awesome that you are so close! I need to start keeping track of mine – I wonder if I get anywhere close to that!! Also – Someday, Someday, Maybe is no good? What a bummer! I saw that Lauren Graham came out with a book, and I was hoping that it would be good because I love her!

  3. I have been GLUED to NetFlix!!!!! I am currently watching Gossip Girl and I am mid-way through Season 5. HA HA AH!!! Yes, I could sound really lame, but DAMN THIS SHOW IS GOOD! I am addicted. Not sure WHAT I am going to do when it’s over! Luckily Netflix has a lot of options!

    1. I totally felt that way after I finished Pretty Little Liars! I never thought I would get so addicted to a show but it totally sucked me in πŸ™‚ I think I have watched almost all of the Gossip Girl episodes but I need to go back through and watch the last season!

  4. I love Netflix!!! My boyfriend and I have show marathons. We FINALLY finished the entire series of The Office. We also watch Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards, and American Horror. It seems like you like comedies. The full 30 Rock series is on Netflix. How I Met Your Mother is another favorite of ours. We identify with Lily and Marshall.

    1. I will check out both of those suggestions! I have heard great things about both. I used to love dramas and thrillers; however, I watched the very first episode of America Horror last year and didn’t sleep well for a week. Shows like that end up really staying with me for longer than id like 😦 It’s weird because I used to LOVE watching scary movies and now it’s the last thing I would choose.

  5. Haha I don’t have a TV either– and I always say this with an air of superiority but the truth is I TOTALLY have Netflix and it’s probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

PS- I like the idea of a seasonal bucket list, hmm… I’ll have to go check yours out…

    1. I should’ve written a whole review for the book. I wouldn’t say that it isn’t worthwhile; I just wouldn’t read it again. The book had several cheesy moments but it was a fairly quick read for a girly afternoon/weekend. I just didn’t like the main character. She was really whiny which made it difficult to want to keep reading because at times you didn’t want her to succeed. Haha. If you read it, let me. Know what you think πŸ™‚

  6. My husband and I DO have cable, but I feel like I never get to watch anything! Up until a few months ago, my husband worked 2nd shift (3pm-11pm), so the TV was always available to me in the evenings. Now that he works 3rd shift, he is usually watching sports during my normal tv time! It’s probably a blessing in disguise; I tend to get sucked into only the trashiest TV! πŸ˜‰

  7. We haven’t had cable either since living together. I really feel the same way as you, though I do watch a lot of Netflix and we do have a t.v. for movies. I’m really mad at Hulu though, because last time I watched it had 5 commercials in a row multiple times. I don’t think I can take it anymore!

I’m with you on New Girl! I’ve yet to watch The Mindy Project though I hear it’s awesome.

  8. i definitely feel you on not wanting to shell out for cable. not having cable has made me a netflix and hulu whore for sure. but i no longer mindlessly watch tv. if i want to watch nextflix i have to sit down and set it up. with cable i can just flip in on and watch a dumb show just because it’s on and i want to waste time.

  9. I want to read Bill Bryson’s book! Good to hear that you liked it. Is the Lauren Graham who wrote “Someday, Someday Maybe” the same Lauren Graham on Gilmore Girls and Parenthood?
