It’s been a few days since Marty and I got back from Destin so it’s time for a recap!

As I stated in my last post, we spent most of our trip reading, lounging by the pool and/or beach, and eating fresh seafood!Β We enjoyed some amazing shrimp, fish and crab (and one DELICIOUS Bloody Mary – one of my favorites!)

This trip was actually our first beach vacation together! I’ll be honest, I’ve never really enjoyed beach vacations but there was something different about it this time; I really enjoyed myself! Not even the feeling of sticky sunscreen and sand covered skin could bring me down!Β

Unfortunately, there was one thing that put a damper on the trip…

Our vacation was actually supposed to be a couples getaway (with another couple from our church); however, on our first full day, the other husband received news that his dad had had a stroke. 😦 He and his wife ended up flying back to Ohio a few hours after receiving the news. Marty and I were bummed for many reasons (1. We felt awful for the dad 2. We felt awful for our friends that had to leave 3. We were looking forward to a couples vacation) but decided that we needed to make the best of our trip.

I think we did a pretty good job after that first initial day of sadness.

While I miss the feeling of being on vacation, I’m definitely glad to be back in Ohio πŸ™‚

Which type of vacation do you prefer: beach, ‘outdoor-sy’ or ‘big city’?

  1. Your pictures are amazing! The trip looks fab! So sad to hear about your friends dad though, that’s so sad!

  2. I’m not a beach fan either!! These photos are gorgeous!! So sorry to hear about your friends dad, but I would say you two made the best of this trip indeed!

  3. I’ve never really been a fan of beach vacations either because I get so bored just laying out in the sun all day! But the view of the ocean/lake is always nice πŸ™‚ Sounds like you had a great time!

  4. Great photos, Di! I’ve never been to Destin but it looks quaint and a whole lotta fun. So sorry for the dad of your friendβ€”thoughts are with him. 😦

I prefer outdoorsy vacations in national parks to anything else, but beach vacations are fun every once in a while to truly relax. I just sunburn easily so I get grouchy when I’m in the sun too long. That colorful umbrella would do just the trick!

  5. I hope your friends dad is ok. They are in my thoughts! You take the best pictures, you really do! It looks like you guys had a wonderful time. I recently went to the beach for the first time and really did love it. I love the whole concept of just laying around and watching the waves come in and go out and also catching beautiful sunsets. But I also like the business of the city vacations. I would love to travel to the East coast one year for a vacation and take in the sites there! πŸ™‚

  6. That’s so sad, I hope that his dad is going to be okay!

Growing up, we usually went “up north” (in Michigan) for most of our vacations, so being by the water is comforting to me. However, I can’t just sit at the beach all day — I like to be active and explore! I also prefer the Great Lakes to oceans (which my husband thinks is weird), probably because there isn’t as much humidity and it cools down in the evenings!

    1. Thankfully his dad was out of the hospital by the next morning! I think he is doing okay now. I’m definitely with you though – I love to be active and explore! I think that’s why I want to travel to Mackinac so badly πŸ™‚

  7. Hmm. That’s a tough question that you pose. I kind of like when there is a combination of all three. πŸ™‚ Like when there is a beach or some sort of large body of water that you can swim in (a pool totally counts πŸ˜‰ ), but I also like having other places to explore like a city or a local site. One of the three by itself can get kind of boring after a day or two.

That’s terrible about the other couple having to leave early, but of course I’d want to get back with my father too after that happened. A similar thing occurred with my parents this summer. My mom went with my dad on a business trip to Chicago and half way through got word that my grandma had fallen and broken her hip. My mom left right away and hopped on a train (my dad had to stay at the conference because he had to get the class credits to get his certification renewed). The major bummer was that she missed out on Kelly Clarkson concert that they had tickets for that night 😦

It still looks like you had fun though! Maybe you should plan a mini weekend getaway somewhere close by to include your friends!

  8. Your pictures are awesome!! My husband’s parents have a house in Panama City Beach (where he lived for awhile growing up) so we make it down there about once a year. We usually take a day trip to Seaside which I *believe* is between Panama City and Destin? It’s such a gorgeous area. Looks like you had a great time…and that last pic of the donut (or whatever that is!) looks delish. Looking forward to meeting you next week!

  9. I’m not really a big beach vacationer and neither is my husband so it works out well. Every year, his entire family goes to the beach together and we always sit it out. I feel bad, but we don’t get a ton of vacation time, so the last thing we want to do is use up what we do have on a vacation that isn’t really our speed. Definitely prefer exploring new cities!
