She Loved to Read.

“She’d become an English major for the purest and dullest of reasons: because she loved to read.”
― Jeffrey EugenidesThe Marriage Plot

I listened to The Marriage Plot audio book during my commute to work last spring. Although I didn’t love the book, I found myself relating to the main character in numerous ways; one of which was her passion for books and reading.

I’ve written a few posts on books that I’ve read and occasionally update my book blog (whenever I remember); however, in making reading more of a priority this year, I figured I’d need to fill you guys in as a kind of accountability to stick with my goal of 52 books.

I read somewhere around 30 books last year (including The Great Gatsby, Gone Girl, Yes My Darling Daughter, Where’d You Go Bernadette, Bossypants, and Emma) but looking back, that number could’ve been much higher. It’s not that I didn’t have the time; I simply was too lazy or spent time on other pastimes.

Reading is one of my favorite (I mean favorite) things to do. I need to make more time for it and, as much as I hate to say it, disconnect from social media more often.

All that said, here is my list for 2013:

> Last Man in Tower by Aravind Adiga

> The Middlesteins by Jami Attenberg

> The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

> Penelope by Rebecca Harrington

> The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

> This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz

> The End of Your Life Book Club by William Schwalbe

> Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Book Store by Robin Sloan

> Dear Life by Alice Murano

This list contains only a handful of the books I plan to read this year. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to send them my way. There is nothing better than escaping into the world of a great book 🙂

Here’s to a year full of reading! 🙂

What are you currently reading? Do you enjoy reading? Do you have a favorite type of book to read?

  1. I love to read too! Like you, I could have read much more this year, but tend to busy myself with other things. My goal for this year is to read 25 books. I will have to check out the books on your list- I am always looking for new suggestions!

  2. I love to read, but struggle to find good books that SUCK me in!! I am reading a book right now about a vegan ultramarathoner and his story telling is amazing!! I will have to check out some of these books next!

  3. Right now I am reading Dare Me – it brings me back to my high school days of cheerleading…without some of the darker things they do in the book haha

  4. I’ve been rereading some old favorites. Shame, by Salman Rushdie is my favorite book of all time, so I’ve been carrying that around. I’m also revisiting the Wetzie Bat books by Franscesca Lia Block.

  5. Oh, I have definitely slacked in reading this past year and it’s one of my favorite things to do too. I’m not currently reading a book, but hope to start one soon! (and really…I just need to get off the Internet to do that.)

    1. I know! It’s so hard because the Internet is such a fun way to stay connected, learn new things, be creative or just blow off steam but I definitely need to find other ways of doing all of those things besides on the Internet! 🙂 Good luck finding a good book to read – if you find one that is worthwhile, let me know!

  6. I love that quote. I can definitely relate to that. I love to read, and, right now, I am one book away from finishing the Stephanie Plum books. I’ve been trying to get through the series for months and as soon I as I get the last one done, I finally get to read some other things! In fact, just this morning I picked up Dark Objects and the book about one of the real people of Downton Abbey! Can’t wait!
